Selective Media Censorship

An interesting back and forth has been going on between two Pittsburgh bloggers, Dave Copeland and DJHLIGHTS that is worth noting. It seems clear to me that DJHLIGHTS was simply pointing out the hypocrisy of Clear Channel’s decision to censor Howard Stern yet not censor Jim Quinn, whose politics are more in line with their interests. A more illustrative example of the same type of hypocrisy was exibited last week when Michael Eisner gave the following reason for Disney’s blocking Mirimax from distributing Michael Moore’s latest film, Fahrenheit 911,

“We informed both the agency that represented the film and all of our companies that we just didn’t want to be in the middle of a politically-oriented film during an election year,”

How noble of him. Oh but he forgot to mention that Disney’s talk radio stations (WABC, WMAL, WLS, WBAP, KSFO to name a few) carry three hours of Rush Limbaugh followed by three hours of Sean Hannity on a daily basis. He also forgot to mention that the Disney owned Family Channel carries Pat Robertson’s 700 Club which is nothing less then the broadcast wing of the Christian Coalition and has carried it’s fair share of controversial comments. The point is that it is ridiculous for Clear Channel to ban one personality and not even flinch when another does similar things. This selective-censorship is at least partially why the American electorate is so misinformed on the issues.
