Pining for Ronnie

“The point is, ladies and gentleman, is that greed — for lack of a better word — is good.

Greed is right.

Greed works.

Greed clarifies, cuts through, and captures the essence of the evolutionary spirit.

Greed, in all of its forms — greed for life, for money, for love, knowledge — has marked the upward surge of mankind.

And greed — you mark my words — will not only save Teldar Paper, but that other malfunctioning corporation called the USA.”

That was the theme of the Reagan years proclaimed boldly on the silver screen by Gordon Gekko (Michael Douglas) in the movie Wall Street. Well, I hate to say it but that was nothing buddy. We are living in an unprecedented era of greed. A time when a CEO serving an 18 month prison sentence will continue to collect a $2.5 million salary while in prison, and retain his job when he is released! A time when corporate influence on The Hill means more than the will of the people.

In an excerpt of John Power’s book “Sore Winners” posted by AlterNet the following quote seems to sum it up.

For decades, we were told that company owners and CEOs made a lot more than their employees because they were taking enormous risks. If they made bad decisions, they’d lose their jobs, while workers could just punch the clock and collect their paycheck. That fantasy has been turned upside down in a world in which CEOs of failing companies get extra stock options even as they lay off workers and bankrupt their pension plans.

Well I am sorry for being so blunt but this shit only continues due to the deliberate malfeasance of this administration. The SEC has had ample time to do something about white collar crime but what do they do? Send Martha Stewart to the pokey, symbolically slap some of “Kenny Boy’s” buddies on the wrist, then summarily dismiss one of the largest acts of fraud to date committed on the watch of none other then Dick “go f&%k yourself” Cheney. Come on man, if you want America to believe you give a damn about them you need to do a little better then this. These jokers are making me miss Reagan.
