Welcome Back Mr. Moyers

One good thing about PBS is that it allowed Bill Moyers to work his entire career virtually unnoticed by the majority of the right wing. While they focused their energies on taking down Dan Rather (for what real reasons I still do not understand), Moyers was consistently broadcasting his Progressive message week in and week out with more eloquence and intellect than Rather could ever muster. If anyone thought that his retirement from NOW would end his career they are sorely mistaken.

Moyers has a complete career just in delivering powerful keynote speeches such as those given to the Inequality Forum or The National Conference on Media Reform. If you were lucky enough to catch even one of these speeches you know the skill with which Moyers makes a case. He has a knack for not only being thorough and in-depth with his subject matter, but also covering territory others dare to set foot in.

This piece entitled “There is No Tomorrow” which appeared in the Minneapolis Star Tribune is all of that and then some. The premise of the article is that our government is under the control of “delusional” Christian conservatives that believe it is their mission to facilitate the second coming of Christ.

I’m not making this up. Like Monbiot, I’ve read the literature. I’ve reported on these people, following some of them from Texas to the West Bank. They are sincere, serious and polite as they tell you they feel called to help bring the rapture on as fulfillment of biblical prophecy. That’s why they have declared solidarity with Israel and the Jewish settlements and backed up their support with money and volunteers. It’s why the invasion of Iraq for them was a warm-up act, predicted in the Book of Revelations where four angels “which are bound in the great river Euphrates will be released to slay the third part of man.” A war with Islam in the Middle East is not something to be feared but welcomed — an essential conflagration on the road to redemption. The last time I Googled it, the rapture index stood at 144 — just one point below the critical threshold when the whole thing will blow, the son of God will return, the righteous will enter Heaven and sinners will be condemned to eternal hellfire.

Before you shake this one off as some conspiracy theory check out the Google results for rapture index and read some of these sites. This is no joke my friends, the lunatics are running the asylum and what I want to know is – what do the George Will’s of the world have to say about it? The last time these people made a powerplay during the Reagan years it was pushed back firmly by those on the right who realized that the ends do no always justify the means. Apparently such logic has not prevailed this time around as you folks do not seem at all disturbed by the fact that these people were given the reigns or that your glorious leader is one of them.

Thank goodness the right spent all their time focusing on a toothless lion like Dan Rather, if it were not for this we may not have been “graced” by the fantastic work of Bill Moyers. Welcome back Mr. Moyers, and keep up the great work.
