Karl Rove The Most Insidious of Traitors?

[NOTE: This piece was generated today as my weekly contribution for the Unpaid Punditry Corps. If the discussion here seems slow head over there, I am sure it will get heated.]

One of the larger “other shoes” that has yet to drop on the Bush administration is the ongoing investigation into what members of his staff were responsible for leaking the undercover identity of Ambassador Joe Wilson’s wife Valerie Plame. In the MSM the focus of this investigation has been not on the fact that this treasonous crime took place, but instead on the drama surrounding two journalists and their unwillingness to turn over to a Grand Jury their sources in this leak. At present the two journalists at the center of this story are Matt Cooper from Time Magazine and Judith Miller of the New York Times (but let’s not forget the role that Robert Novak played in this affair as well).

Well it would seem that this shoe is just about ready to drop and it is a Shaquille O’Neil sized 14! According to MSNBC senior political analyst Lawrence O’Donnell Time has just released Matt Coopers record and emails and wouldn’t you know it they reveal his source in this leak as none other than Karl Rove. Last night on the McLaughlin Group O’Donnell had the following to say about this development:

“What we’re going to go to now in the next stage, when Matt Cooper’s e-mails, within Time Magazine, are handed over to the grand jury, the ultimate revelation, probably within the week of who his source is.”

“And I know I’m going to get pulled into the grand jury for saying this but the source of…for Matt Cooper was Karl Rove, and that will be revealed in this document dump that Time magazine’s going to do with the grand jury.”

Holly crap! Let me remind you my dear reader what George W. Bush’s father George H.W. Bush said in a dedication speech for the George Bush Center for Intelligence on this law singed by Ronald Reagan known as “Public Law 97-200, the Intelligence Identities Protection Act of 1982, imposing criminal penalties on those who reveal the names of covert intelligence personnel.”

“We need more human intelligence. That means we need more protection for the methods we use to gather intelligence and more protection for our sources, particularly our human sources, people that are risking their lives for their country. Even though I’m a tranquil guy now at this stage of my life, I have nothing but contempt and anger for those who betray the trust by exposing the name of our sources. They are, in my view, the most insidious, of traitors.” – George H.W. Bush, April 16, 1999

So the question remains, will Rove, who I am sure the Bush family has adopted as one of their own, be held to the account? Only time will tell.
