Iran Launches New Sea-based Missiles

Following U.S. Naval exercises in the Gulf Iran has launched three new sea-based missiles, at least one of which is reported to be capable of carrying cluster warheads.

“Dozens of missiles were fired including Shahab-2 and Shahab-3 missiles. The missiles had ranges from 300 km (190 miles) up to 2,000 km (1,200 miles),” Iranian state television reported, without showing any footage.

The launch was followed up with bellicose language from one Iranian military official.

“Our enemies should keep their hostility off the Persian Gulf,” said Adm. Sardar Fadavi, the deputy navy chief of the elite Revolutionary Guard, hours after his troops tested the new missiles in Gulf.

“They should not initiate any move that would make the region tense,” he said of the US.
