“God Won’t Bless a Non-Conservative America”

People for the American Way was watching the “Values Voter” debate last night so you didn’t have to, and they noticed that a gospel choir hired for the purpose had re-written the lyrics to “God Bless America” to reflect those tolerant conservative values. (OXYMORON ALERT!)

Below are a few of the more…interesting stanzas sung at the debate.

Why should God bless America?
She’s forgotten he exists
And has turned her back
On everything that made her what she is

Why should God stand beside her
Through the night with the light from his hand?
God have mercy on America
Forgive her sin and heal our land

The courts ruled prayer out of our schools
In June of ‘62
Told the children “you are your own God now
So you can make the rules”
O say can you see what that choice
Has cost us to this day
America, one nation under God, has gone astray

***

In ‘73 the Courts said we
Could take the unborn lives
The choice is yours don’t worry now
It’s not a wrong, it’s your right

But just because they made it law
Does not change God’s command
The most that we can hope for is
God’s mercy on our land

You can find all the lyrics here, along with a vid. Meanwhile, PFAW reports that the rest of the debate basically should have been called “Republicans Hate Gays.”

The first question of the night, from the American Family Association’s Buddy Smith, was about “protecting” marriage.  Every candidate except libertarian Ron Paul pledged to push for a federal marriage amendment.

***

Paul Weyrich, a founder of the modern Religious Right political movement, closed the first section of the program by asking what candidates would do to counteract “the homosexual agenda.”  Most candidates went back to the need for a marriage amendment to prevent, in Keyes’ typically tempered words, the “destruction of traditional marriage.”

***

During the “yes or no” segment of the program, Stephen Bennett, self-proclaimed “former homosexual,” argued that homosexual behavior is immoral and dangerous, and asked whether, as president, candidates would support legislation ensuring that schools would forfeit federal funding if they expose children to “homosexual propaganda” that puts them at risk. All the candidates clicked their green lights to answer “yes.”

And so on. All things considered, it must have been quite a heart-warming show as Republican candidates fell over each other condemning Larry Craig, “Tex” Haggerty, Mark Foley, what’s-his-name from Florida, and all the other closet Republican gays who’ve been outed the last few years.

Oh, wait…  Sorry. Turns out none of them were mentioned.

One Response to ““God Won’t Bless a Non-Conservative America””

  1. Haven’t read the whole thing, but interesting tidbit of trivia; I’m actually almost done reading a book about that whole courts ruled god our of the public schools in June of 62 thing.

Because yes, we should have the King James Version of the Bible read everyday and followed by the Lord’s Prayer because Catholics and Protestents torching each other’s church’s and waging miniature wars on the streets was SO much fun.
