Gosh, it’s been AGES since we heard anything from camp McCain, and when the beleaguered little candidacy that thought it could finally does find itself bobbing on the wires, the story is so embarrassing I feel bad for the Arizona Senator who once had so much credibility.
The exchange came from a campaign stop in New Hampshire as McCain opted to reach out to the young vote. What he probably thought was a great opportunity to get his message out to a largely docile and uninformed audience turned into what must have felt a nightmare as one student in particular stood up and called him out on the carpet but good.
“Discrimination in any form is unacceptable in America today,” McCain said.
Sleaster pressed on. “Do you support civil unions or gay marriage?”
“So you believe in taking away someone’s rights because you believe it’s wrong?”
Sleaster indicated that he wanted to follow up again.
“You have one more? Go ahead you’re doing good,” McCain encouraged.
“I came here looking to see a leader,” Sleaster said. “I don’t.”
The assembled students murmured, and a teacher started to step in.
“I understand,” McCain said. “I thank you. That’s what America is all about.”
Man that’s gotta hurt. But you know what they say; kids say the darndest things.
