The Two Twelves

Today is not only eventful because of the dog & pony show taking place in Congress and the 9/11 rememberances. On the lighter side, today is probably the most eventful music release day for a so-far anemic sales year. Two of the most highly anticipated albums of the year are dropping; one being Kanye West’s Graduation and the other being 50 Cent’s Curtis.

The Metacritic has the early reviews with Kanye scoring at an 82/100 among 14 critics and 8.8/10 after 46 user votes. 50 Cent is coming in at a 63/100 from 6 critics and a woeful 1.7/10 after 51 user votes. Ouch!!!

I haven’t had any great hip hop tunes in a while and the two twelves in the trunk are in need of a definite workout. I’ll be picking up the Kanye West disc today, but I’m going to wait on 50 Cent or maybe just download the “AYO Technology” single from itunes.

For my money, the best rapper currently on the scene is Lil Wayne and he’ll be dropping a new set in December.

    Dude… Go get Aesop’s new CD NOW! Seriously. Fitty and LW aren’t even emcees. Fitty had spent years writing his first cd or two and after that turned out to be garbage, and… Lil Wayne?

    I’ll try out some Aesop Rock as its available on my favorite download site – emusic. I also listen to Lifesavas, Sage Francis and Jay Dee (R.I.P.). But that doesn’t mean I don’t dig the bangin’ beats the monied hip hoppers can crank out with their bigger production budgets. Nor will I deny the value shared culture adds to our musical enjoyment. If you’re in a club in Vegas, do you want to hear Fitty’s “In Da Club” or a song by Aesop that may be great but nobody knows?

    Also, the best hip hop album of 2006 was the Dedication 2 mixtape from Lil Wayne & DJ Drama (available on emusic BTW).

  3. To be dead honest, I’ve become widely disenfranchized with hip hop after seeing what the Southern rap movement did to the genre. Not that I don’t enjoy the thick and aggressive beats, but the vapidness and elementary quality of the actual rhyming severely rubbed me the wrong way.

    These guys largely had both no flow and no substance, a far cry from the likes of NAS or Tupac. I could dig for some better stuff, I’m sure, but it just seems like a genre that needs to find itself again.

    Note; when I talk about southern rap, I’m of course excluding Outkast, as Andre 3000 is one of the better emcees out there.

    Don’t get me wrong, I get you on the cultural thing. There are some songs that are just great to hear in an easy social setting, but I think of hip hop as also having a sincere edge to it, you know?
