Um, Shouldn’t You Know?

It’s almost eerie. After Bush and Iraq War supporters have spent much of the ordeal screaming from the rooftops how vital our presence in Iraq is to our nation’s security, I find it just odd that Patraeus seemed taken off guard when it came his time to read from the script.

The exchange comes from outgoing Republican Senator John warner who has in recent weeks began to change positions in regards to the Iraq War:

WARNER: I hope in the recesses of your heart that you know that strategy will continue the casualties, stress on our forces, stress on military families, stress on all Americans. Are you able to say at this time, if we continue what you have laid before the Congress, this strategy, that if you continue, you are making America safer? PETRAEUS: Sir, I believe that this is indeed the best course of action to achieve our objections in Iraq.

WARNER: Does that make America safer?

PETRAEUS: Sir, I don’t know actually. I have not sat down and sorted out in my own mind. What I have focused on and been riveted on is how to accomplish the mission of the Multinational Force in Iraq.

Uh, I hate to be the one to point this out, but isn’t this one of those things Patraeus should know?

UDPATE (Mike): Please watch this video of Joe Biden on Hardball with Chris Matthews talking about this exchange. (Note: you will have to use Internet Explorer to view this video as MSN does not support any other browsers.) Once it appears on YouTube I will get it up here as well.

UDPATE II (Mike): I ended up putting this exchange up on YouTube myself as it didn’t materialize in time. You can view it here, Good Luck Soldier, I Don’t Know What the Hell You’re Fighting For.

Apparently that wasn’t one of the questions he was coached on. I thought I saw it flash across his face for a split-second: he was going to say “No” and then realized the WH wouldn’t like that answer and fumbled for something he could get away with saying. Obviously from Matthews’ ire, he picked the wrong fumble.

  6. No, he most definitely didn’t. hopefully that will hit on youtube early enough tomorrow to lead with it in the morning. That was just outrageous.
