Many, many years ago I had lots of nerve and passively sat at a card table offering people a petition to sign protecting reproductive choice. The few of us who were assigned state fair parking lot duty just sat and visited with our little NOW signs, NARAL signs, etc.. lining the base of our table. We approached no one and were able to collect lots of signatures by interested people. We sometimes answered basic questions and weren't bothered by people who disagreed; we just listened without argument. We also had baby formula dumped on the table and human spit and "Christian' hate language and screeching spewed our way. A lady flung her soft drink at one of my co-activists, but we still stayed till the traffic died down. I have tempered my nerve over the years. but I never forgot what we were up against back then. There were only a few, but they were pretty frightening people. In this current climate of anything related to sexuality being satan-inspired, and if decent people who view reproductive control as a right in a civilized society have to be driven underground for safety, I'm not worried. Decent people will still provide choice and birth control and other help to anyone who seeks it. This country appears to have gone plain and simply crazy (and overly proud of it) since all those years ago, but I have to hope our decency and respect for others will overwhelm the hatred at some point soon and we'll be free to behave humanely. If not, we'll just have to develop a functioning parallel society (universe) or something. These people hate everyone; they make me tired.
