Announcement: Education Debate

I am both pleased and terrified to make an announcement here at Comments From Left Field.  I’ve made solutions a kind of theme now and then in recent writings, and I wanted to take that to the next level, and my friend Mark from Publius Endures is going to help me with that.

Mark and I have agreed to a two month long debate on Education.  We had considered only one month, but considering that we have the Christmas holidays coming up, and I’ll be scarce for the first two weeks of the new year, we went with two months.

What makes this debate different from the norm though is that we are not debating to “win”.  I’m not going to try and invalidate Mark’s position just as he’s not going to outright attempt to obliterate mine, but instead our goal is to reach a compromise.

We want to prove that two people on opposite sides of a debate can still manage to reach a solution.

And so, starting next week, we’re both going to put forth our proposals on what we think an ideal public education system will look like, and from there we will begin a two month long series of posts both here and at PE in which we will openly debate and compromise.  Our hope is to come to a mutually beneficial broad public education system by the end of January.

As I said, I’m pleased to announce this.  I hope that this will serve as an example that partisan warfare is not the only way to get things done, and that a return to compromise style debate is in everyone’s best interest.  On the other hand, I also admit that I’m petrified at the same time.

On one hand, this will involve me expressing ideas in a way I’m not accustomed to, and I think it takes a certain amount of intellectual courage on both of our parts to even get into this.  But I’m also afraid that we may fail, that my hopes of compromise might prove to be empty.

But fear of failure never accomplished anything.  People are not satisfied with the way government works, but you know what?  We’re not trying to show a new way, just remind people of a way that does work.

I think you’re both already winning the debate, just for approaching it like this.
