The Grammys Sucked!

In this lull before tomorrow’s primaries, I thought I’d share my thoughts on what is typically an annual delight – the live music performances at the Grammy Awards.

The Grammys provide a great venue for live money because the show’s producers provide artists with lavish sets and musical accompaniment varying from the best studio musicians to full orchestras.  Every year you get, at least, 4 or 5 great performances.  Not this year.

Kanye West’s medley was the best – opening with an explosive version of “Stronger” (flames firing and Daft Punk bangin’) and anchored by his touching remix of “Dear Mama” (heartbreaking in light of the recent passing of the song’s subject).

After that, I only liked the old fogey stuff (the Lang-Lang/Hancock duo pianos and Bocelli’s singing) or the goofy, fun song by Brad Paisley (great sounding guitar with some nice slide work in the back).

The rest was largely forgetable.  The show was anchored by the car-crash-in-waiting performance of Amy Winehouse.  She showed, didn’t meltdown, seemed a bit hazy.  The meltdown will continue in private with loud public leaks.

Overall, a letdown for a show into which the viewer has to invest three and a half hours.  Probably an apt reflection of the current state of the big label music industry.  Might’ve done better having Arcade Fire, the White Stripes and/or Radiohead perform.

Who’s Amy Winehouse and what meltdown? I am so out of it….

Amy Winehouse is London’s version of Britney. The meltdown involves drug abuse, failed rehabs, bloody spousal brawls, husband thrown in the can, etc., etc.

She won all the big awards except album of the year. Here’s a taste.
