The Silliness of the Gas Tax Holiday
Funny. When Thomas Friedman isn’t talking about Iraq, he sounds kinda reasonable.

In a fit of pure irony, the Republican party has been up in arms over something they have turned into fine art. I suppose, what’s good for the goose is not good for the gander.

Nearly three years ago my grandfather, a veteran of World War II, a man in his early 80’s, and a man whom at the time was apparently as healthy as an ox, suddenly found himself in suburban Detroit’s Beaumont hospital on the verge of death. What happened to him is not unlike what happens to many American’s of his age. One day he found out that he was not nearly as healthy as he and his doctors thought he was. An emergency quadruple bi-pass later and he has never quite recovered and now looks and acts as old his 86 years would seem.

In the heat of the battle for the Democratic nomination, and the tuning up for the general election fight to come, it’s easy to overlook the essential question of why anyone in their right mind would even want to be President. What would motivate someone to seek the office?

Senator Hillary Rodham Clinton lined up with Senator John McCain, the presumptive Republican nominee for president, in endorsing a plan to suspend the federal excise tax on gasoline, 18.4 cents a gallon, for the summer travel season. But Senator Barack Obama, Mrs. Clinton’s Democratic rival, spoke out firmly against the proposal, saying it would save consumers little and do nothing to curtail oil consumption and imports.
While Mr. Obama’s view is shared by environmentalists and many independent energy analysts, his position allowed Mrs. Clinton to draw a contrast with her opponent in appealing to the hard-hit middle-class families and older Americans who have proven to be the bedrock of her support. She has accused Mr. Obama of being out of touch with ordinary Americans who are struggling to meet their mortgages and gas up their cars and trucks.
So let me get this straight: Obama is “out of touch” for backing a tax that funds needed infrastructure repairs in roads (in some cases, overdue repairs… re: Minnesota bridge collapse), and all this tax break would do is reduce gasoline prices by 20 cents? Whoopee! Here in Massachusetts, gas is at $3.50 a gallon right now — Hillary wants me to pay $3.30. Wow, don’t I feel special?! Of course, two weeks ago the price was $3.17, so the tax break.. Err, excuse me, the Hillary/McCain bipartisan tax pander, can’t even keep up with two weeks worth of friggen inflation. Yet Obama is out of touch? Really? Say what?
This presidential campaign gets more retarded by the day.

Hey guys, I’m going to be taking a day, maybe two to just clear my mind and recharge. In my absence, I leave you in the very capable hand of my co-bloggers, and this open thread with which to amuse yourself.
See you no later than Thursday!

That’s it? The big honkin’ tax cut that John McCain and now Hillary Clinton want to give us at the gas pump will result in a whopping thirty dollars over the course of the summer? With that much money I can pay off… no… But I could go buy… wait… Okay, but at least it will be easier to… oh, wait, not really.
Well, I could go buy a video game with it? You know, not a good new one, but a decently priced used game for the PS2 maybe.
Michael O’Hare goes into why Obama’s right to oppose this cut.

John Derbyshire has said a lot of things that, to put it mildly, I vehemently disagree with. Even in this post I take issue with a few of the things he says, but I also have to LOVE the disdain towards Intelligent Design coming from the other end of the political spectrum for a change.

As I asked earlier this evening, the question isn’t why Obama can’t put Clinton away, but the other way around given that Clinton has enjoyed quite a bit of bad press against Obama. She’s still struggling in the polls, but what’s more, Obama continues to outstrip her in collecting Super Delegates.

As a continuation to this post, I have a proposition. The GOP is going after Democratic Congressional candidate Travis Childers using some pretty deplorable tactics that are pretty much race baiting. Now, I’ve been saying, time and again, we have to start pushing back on the hard fights, on the dog whistles and minutiae, and this is exactly what I’m talking about.
We can all sit around and debate whether or not Wright is a liability, or we can make damn sure that he isn’t. If we had all our ducks in a row, every time the GOP dropped a deplorable tactic such as this, we’d make them pay for it. And that’s what I propose we do now.
I say, we turn this ad against Childers into a fundraiser for him. He may still lose this war, but if the netroots are really going to make a big difference, it should be on things like this. If the GOP wants to get dirty, I say we make them hurt for every drop of mud and filth they choose to throw.
Make them effing bleed for it.
Please donate to Travis Childers, and pass this along to any other blogs and friends you know.
The ad in question is below the fold.

Over the weekend, Rev. Jeremiah Wright engaged in two very high profile events, one being a Bill Moyers interview that received little more than a whisper in the political press and blogs, and a more mercurial speech delivered to the NAACP.
It is interesting to note that there seems to be the slightest shift in attitude towards Wright. Not exactly a watershed moment where America comes to welcome him with open arms; indeed many aren’t, and I won’t expect them to. But for some, reading in comments to news items and blogs, and reading some bloggers who have been quick to condemn the man when the youtube hit piece went viral, I’ve noticed a slight walking back of some of the criticism he’s faced. And there will likely be more.

Okay, before we get to the heart of the matter, let’s take a hypothetical situation. You’re driving to work. It’s a 55, but you’re doing 70. If you’re anything at all like me, you probably got something hard and heavy playing and it’s cranked. Your head’s bobbin’ and you’re getting totally amped in preparation of sitting at a desk all day long.
Then you see flashing lights in your rear view.
