In other words- the longer we remain in Iraq fighting a violent insurgency while pretending we can install a puppet government, the more the people of Iraq are forced to turn to the insurgents for help, which means the more we are fighting the very people we are supposedly helping.

Yup. The Hezbollah effect, if you will. There are far more parallels with the 1975-1990 war in Lebanon than with Vietnam. Iraq truly is a "proxy battleground for a host of regional [and internal] powers", as Iason Athanasiadis put it.

"This woman and her family live rent-free in a house provided by the Sadrist movement after being forced from their home. Refugees International found that Iraqi militias are the main providers of food, clothing, oil and other basic resources to 2.7 million internally displaced Iraqis, because the Iraqi government and international community are failing to assist them. "
