Breaking: Tim Russert Dies of Heart Attack

I didn’t believe it when I read the headline.  I thought it was a joke, maybe a parody or something.  I know, jokes like that aren’t really funny, but there have been worse jokes.

But it wasn’t the Onion that provided the headline, but NYT’s The Caucus.

I’m not exactly sure where I stand with this.  Media personalities have passed on, as they are to do, but to be honest, being as young as I am, and as new to the political scene as I am, I have to admit to not necessarily developing a personal relationship to any of them.

In that regard, Tim Russert is different.  He’s been a constant political voice since I’ve first taken up blogging, and one that I must admit to being rather fond of.

As is the case with all journalists, Russert has taken more than a few lumps, and heaps of criticism were no stranger to him.  But even when I disagreed with Russert, it was often at the cost of realizing that the disagreement came from the fact that he was probably doing his job.

He wasn’t perfect, no one ever is, but apparently the news team over at MSNBC is pretty broken up over this, and I can fully well understand why.

Perhaps even more devestating is how young he was; he was only 58.

Like I said, I’m still not sure exactly where I am with this.  But I know my thoughts and hopes are with his family at home, and with his family at MSNBC.

I’m in shock. We saw him in April at Southern CT State University’s Distinguished Speakers series. He was funny and just a great storyteller.

    This is so sad.

I keep thinking about his son, who just graduated from Boston College. How absolutely awful for him, although perhaps he will take some comfort in knowing that his dad did see him graduate. It’s terrible to lose a parent at such a young age.
