Robert F. Kennedy Died 40 Years Ago Today

I had actually forgotten that today was the anniversary of his assassination. Shame on me. Ann Althouse has a personal remembrance. I found it very moving — maybe partly because she and I were the same age when this happened. Like her, I was 17 — a month away from my 18th birthday.

Ann describes driving to Manhattan to join the long line of mourners at St. Patrick’s Cathedral filing past Kennedy’s coffin. I was at home, with my parents, listening to the radio announcement. It’s very powerful for me, because I don’t remember my father’s specific reaction five years earlier, when JFK was killed (I was 13 then), but I vividly recall, when the radio announcer said that Bobby Kennedy was dead, my father shouting, “NO! NOT AGAIN!” and starting to cry. God, just remembering this now is getting me emotional.

I won’t quote from Ann’s piece here; it might be a bit graphic for some people — although appropriately so, in this instance, I think. Just go and read it. It’s well worth your time.
