“Rule: Use a Cutout” UPDATED

Little Green Nitwits:

Here’s yet another disgusting antisemitic page at the official Barack Obama campaign web site, by a group calling itself “Socialists for Obama.” This group of Jew-haters has apparently been at his site since April, and there are numerous comments from Obama supporters that are indistinguishable from the hate speech you’ll find at neo-Nazi sites: Barack Obama : : Change We Can Believe In | Socialists for Obama: How the jewish lobby works. [link has been removed – mb]

Ah, the classics never get old:

[Roger Stone] is notorious for his electioneering dirty tricks for years. His first election fraud was to open a bank account with a phony name called The Young Socialist Alliance and send a campaign contribution to Pete McCloskey, an antiwar Republican in the Seventies, who was thinking of running against Nixon 1972. As soon as the check cleared Stone then promptly called the press, claiming funding from Socialists for McCloskey.

Jeffrey Toobin, writing in the June 26th issue of The New Yorker, brings us this little bit of (purportedly) unsolicited advice for McCain courtesy Stone:

McCain’s route to victory, Stone believes, is a Nixonian slash-and-burn campaign against Barack Obama, the likely Democratic nominee. “Obama and his wife are élitists and they’re weak,” Stone told me. “They don’t share middle-class values. Middle-class Americans are proud of their country, and they are not. He thinks he’s going to sit down with Iran and Hamas. How do you know he’s not going to shake hands with a suicide bomber? You can’t sit down with people who don’t want to sit down. All he’s going to do is raise taxes, which is going to give the government more money but it’s not going to create any jobs.” Stone added, “McCain himself should not run a slash-and-burn campaign, but a slash-and-burn campaign will have to be run by others.” (Rule: “Use a cutout.”)

Ratfucking is so much easier these days, what with chain emails, Web 2.0 and a compliant network of manufactured outrage experts like the best and brightest (snerk) of the wingnutosphere to help spread misinformation like fertilizer. The seed was planted earlier this year during the nomination process, and now that the general is upon us they are hoping for full bloom. Let’s hope that such obvious historical parallels like “Socialists for McCloskey Obama” aren’t lost on the national press corps (yeah, I know, and a goddamn Shetland pony, mattt).

UPDATE: Here’s the google cache of the my.barack.com post [update 06/09: link corrected — mb].

A few things:

– the my.barack.com post appears to have gone up on June 7th, not April 14th.

– The original “Jewish Lobby” post, copy-pasted to my.barack.com by a “Juan Carlos”, appeared in April in on a site called “Real Jew News”, run by anti-semite nutcase “Brother Nathaenal”.

– All anti-semitic comments originally appeared on the Real Jew News post, with corresponding timestamps. For some reason the comments at my.barack.com have my.barack urls, even though they appear to have been directly copy pasted from Real Jew News.

It appears whoever did the copy-paste job also changed each individual comment URL from a Real Jew News address to a my.barack address, eg, the URL for the comment from “Brenda” on April 14, 2008 @ 4:56 pm at Real Jew News, http://www.realjewnews.com/?p=185#comment-1840 becomes http://my.barackobama.com/page/community/post/juancarloscruz/gG5BSr/commentary#comment-1840 at my.barack.com on April 14, 2008 @ 4:56 pm (note that both comments are number 1840).  Also, if you scroll down to the very bottom of the cached my.barack.com post, you can see the only two comments from actual my.barack.com members, complaining about the length of the post. All anti-semitic comments appear in the body of the post.

As a one-time Obama supporter please note that LGF has identified tens or hundreds of posts. I can’t be lieve they are all Repub dirty tricks.

  2. matttbastard says:

It only takes one seed to sprout…

    (“one-time Obama supporter”–good one.)

  3. Kevin Hayden says:

Matt, I think I get your point, but not being sure, are you saying some rightwingers planted web screeds at the Obama site last April where nobody at Team Obama knew about it?

Would you drop me a line and splain it so I can pass it on to my readers?

Btw, it might be a good idea if a handful of folks sat around and brainstormed all the potential ways a trickster could use the web (besides the obvious email rumors) to trick readers/voters, so a pre-emption team (let’s call ’em The Hoax Busters) could be on the lookout and send out alerts when fresh scams are spotted, from site attacks, to phone campaigns, to push polls, etc, etc.

We might even want to set up a Troll Check site to check comments trolls IP addresses/email addresses, etc, so bloggers could have a password-protected site to track suspicious ones and root out some of the rightwing poseurs.

I can already tell it’s gonna get way fugly, so we might as well try to head off the shitheads at the pass.

    Kevin: check your inbox.

  5. Steve J. says:

It’s been deleted from Obama’s site. Kevin writes “Matt, I think I get your point, but not being sure, are you saying some rightwingers planted web screeds at the Obama site last April where nobody at Team Obama knew about it?

Would you drop me a line and splain it so I can pass it on to my readers?”

Anyone can join the site, so there’s no way in advance to check the posts. I don’t know how many people have joined but I suspect it’s a large number and checking each submission would be time consuming.

OTOH, how did the wingnuts catch on so fast???

Steve J: We’re updating. For now, here’s what we have:

Here’s the google cache of the my.barack.com post.

  7. Steve J. says:

    Matt –

thanx for the update. I’ll link to your comment.

  8. debrazza says:

It is untrue that LGF has identified “hundreds” or more posts. Just run the Google search yourself. There is a grand total of 24 instances in total where the phrase “jewish lobby” is used on his entire site.

  9. bud says:

Jed Report already batted down ridiculous LGF claims of 1000’s of anti-semitic posts at Obama’s site.

  10. bongo says:

If this were a single instance, I’d have to agree with Matttbastard, however, this seems to be just one of many data points.

    Obama.

    Friend of Rashid Khalidi? Check.

    Supported by Hamas? Check.

    Jeremiah Wright, Michael Pfleger? Check.

Samantha Powers and Zbigniew Brzezinski? Check.

Trinity United Church, affinity to Lewis Farahkan? Check.

    Ayers and Dohrn? Check.

Virulently anti-Semitic posters on his website as Mr. Johnson has factually pointed out? Check.

    Who’d a thunk it?

Seems like more of the same.

At what point is there enough smoke here to safely declare a fire has broken out?

(I don’t accept the argument that Obama’s campaign has no control over these posting. It’s a presidential campaign , not Best Blogger. Twenty+ mill a month can surely pay the salaries of a couple of moderators.)

  11. nevrdull says:

bongo: guilt by association. what are you trying to prove? mccain associates him self with bush, pat robertson, john hagee, rod parsley. he on good standing with the saudis, known terrorist-backers. so you’re saying — what? because obama is being endorsed by controversial figures (hamas?? – come on..), oh yea, he’s black, he has a funny name and he could be a muslim – we can’t have that, can we ??
he must be a bad man, then, and an even worse president ? i wish the right would quit this nonsensical bullshit.

(sorry to everybody else, i’m just pissed.)

  12. matttbastard says:

Samantha Powers and Zbigniew Brzezinski? Check.

    Huh?!

Forget the associative fallacy and the overall absurdity of your assertions masquerading as arguments–how the fuck are Powers and Brzezinski even remotely ‘anti-Semitic’? For fuck’s sake, stop mainlining the kool-aid, delete the email forwards, and get reacquainted with your long-lost companion, reality, you dumbshit wingnut troll. “Johnson” + “Factual” = oxymoron.

And Plum Bob also seems to be unaware that terms like “virtual deluge” are meaningless spin. Oh, wait, he doesn’t, because he’s a wingnut bullshit artist.

  13. OmahaRick says:

    Well played, sir. Well. Played.

And thank you for the time and work you put into this post. Now I have some concrete evidence to use when people want to sling that shit against a wall during a conversation.

  14. Stormcrow says:

    Just an FYI.

You folks should know that this basic technique has been in use by cybercrooks for the last two years at minimum, to perform “search engine optimization”, to put in attacks against vulnerable web clients with malicious Javascript and VBscript, and to link to malware booby-traps at third party locations.

Blog and community website comments are an obvious vector for XSS attacks, and one that’s been actively exploited for quite some time.

What we’re seeing here is merely the diffusion of this technique from one branch of organized crime to another.

  15. Thomas Allen says:

Looks like Atriarch and bongo are earning their McCainCampaignPoints this week. I wonder how many of these ridiculous comments they have to post in order to get some o’ that sweet McCain swag.
