Obama’s New Message Shaper: Sarah Palin

You know, it feels like only a couple of days ago when I had personally sworn off writing about John McCain’s running mate for good.  There just wasn’t anything there… literally.  Of course it’s been a little longer than that, I think my ambivalence reached the breaking point right around the whole Bush Doctrine fiasco.

But what I didn’t know then is the absolute train wreck that this woman’s presence in the public eye would become.

There is a debate going on throughout the internets, and it’s a pretty simple one.  Is Sarah Palin really smart and just not prepared for the rigors of a campaign set on the national stage, or is she catastrophically stupid, but at least superficially attractive to conservative political sensibilities?

Strangely enough, this seems to mimic the debate about George W. Bush; is he really smart but plays dumb because it connects with Joe and Jane Sixpack, or does his IQ dwell in the basement in such a fashion that makes him easily manipulated by the diabolical masterminds behind the curtain (of which, Cheney is the arch overloard)?

I still hold final verdict until Thursday night’s debate; if she turns out to perform brilliantly, she will have proven herself to be a political super-genius.  But up until now, the evidence of that is not exactly overwhelming.

In the latest, let’s peak in on Sarah Palin having yet another conversation with the woman whom I am sure she is coming to see as an arch nemesis; Katie Couric.  This is Sarah Palin answering a question from Katie about what appeared to be a jab the Alaskan Governor directed towards Democratic vice presidential candidate Joe Biden’s age:

Oh no, it’s nothing negative at all. He’s got a lot of experience and just stating the fact there, that we’ve been hearing his speeches for all these years. So he’s got a tremendous amount of experience and, you know, I’m the new energy, the new face, the new ideas and he’s got the experience based on many many years in the Senate and voters are gonna have a choice there of what it is that they want in these next four years.

(video can be seen here)

Now, slow down and think about this for one second.  Sarah Palin just framed the stakes of the election between experience, and “the new energy, the new face, the new ideas.”  Remember that folks, that’s what this election is about; old versus the new.

I wonder if, at that particular moment, Palin forgot that at the top of the ticket, the roles were reversed, and it was John McCain who represented the long term experience and Obama who represented “the new energy, the new face, the new ideas.”  Also it’s worth pointing out as Steve Benen does, that the one “new” idea that Sarah Palin has brought to this campaign, putting the government’s checkbook online, was one that Obama already had and put into action during his time as a US Senator.

So I’m still not sold on what’s going on with Sarah Palin.  But what it appears to me is that she’s just not very… aware.  I don’t discount the possibility that she could be very intelligent, but even if she is, she doesn’t seem to be particularly observant of her surroundings, nor the lay of the land upon which she treads.

She appears to talk without fully thinking.  Sometimes these words come out relatively intelligible, as above, but the point seems to be misdirected or inadequate in some way.  Other times, as anyone who actually cringed through one of the Katie Couric interviews can attest, what comes out is garbled and nonsensical as though she is intensely hoping that as long as she fills the silence with words, any words whatsoever, no one will pay too much attention to what those words mean if they mean anything at all.

or is she catastrophically stupid, No, I do not believe her to be stupid or dumb. She is like most of us, which is “smart enough” when conversing with her average fellow citizen.

But she has neither the intellect, education or experience to walk on the world stage with the likes of a Rhodes scholar or a dictator that fought his way up thru the KGB
