The primary people causing a ruckus are the partisan bloggers for McCain. Most people with common sense realise that Obama did not mean to connect that analogy to Palin. That would have been dumb to the nth power, to do so. Just like most people with common sense understand that McCain was joking about the middle-class making up to 5 Million dollars per year. Yet partisan bloggers will use it as fodder regardless.

Still, Obama could have served himself better with some quick self-editing of those words before saying them to avoid giving a false impression. That “lipstick” quote is one of the big sound-bite takeaways from Palin’s speech. People are going to make a connection at some level between the two comments. Although I only saw the video one time, I kind of sensed from the volume of the crowd reaction to his comment that even a sizable portion of his audience was making that connection too.

Sometimes perception trumps the truth.
