Well of course Obama is going to make it look like a tax break for the middle class. That is the range of voters he needs to win. Then he is planning on giving all these families a $1,000, and the kids in university, up to $4,000 and then breaks for the elderly. He is going to give you health care, end the war, and the list goes on. Now for those living in the real world....they look at this and see Obama is saying whatever it takes to get your vote. There is no way the country can afford his promises. If you are relying on all his wish lists coming true, you will see BO stand up and blame it all on Bush. Mark My Words...

One more thing, when you say " The thing is, Democrats tend to try and deflect away from issues they are weak on, ie. National Security" I have to object, when you say this you are playing to the myth that Democrats don't know how to secure this country...which is Bull and is proven wrong by remembering FDR, Truman, and even JFK, who despite some mistakes during the "Bay of Pigs" incident had the good sense to dissuade his Generals from starting WW3.

Kyle, my only comment on the cap gains issue is that the Repugs are going around saying that 100 million Americans are going to get a tax hike under Obama...I don't think that one has to get into the nuance of Capital Gains and Dividends so much as to point out that McCain is twisting the facts, and that they are attempting to throw 401K investments into the stew...now if we started getting into the nuance of ROTH IRAs, then Houston, we (definitely me) might have a problem, LOL.

Hey RM.

One thing I think to point out, the Cap Gains argument is one that I think needs to not really be dug into too much. The tax chart above is pretty simple to go through, but I think when you get into cap gains taxes, that's too nuanced of an argument--one that really speaks to the choir, and doesn't go very far to digging up converts. The thing is, Democrats tend to try and deflect away from issues they are weak on, ie. National Security, but what they really need to do is avoid the debates that get too deep in the weeds for a low information voter to readily pick up.

On the other hand, you are dead right when it comes to seniors. Obama wants to abolish taxes on seniors making 50K or less, as you rightully pointed out. That's good debating ground right there.

Taking things back to a bigger picture, I think this election needs to be forced back to the issues, and that's not going to happen until the first debate. We're stuck in this American Idol crap at least until then. I've got some other ideas, but those will wait until tomorrow; I'm not writing today out of deference to the day.

But if I were to say one thing that Obama has to do right now, he has to do something, anything, to get the base to quit the navel gazing. It could be a great speech, maybe even a speech on sexism, or drop the kind of phantom ad that the McCain team has been dropping, the actual content isn't as important as getting the base fired up and on his side again.

Kyle, glad to see that CFLF is back to looking at McCain mostly. Personally I have saved that tax chart to file and I am posting it on every forum that I can. I am hoping that a netroots offensive will do something to fight the lies and the smears that McCain is peddling. Oh BTW, when McCain or his mouthpieces say that 100 million Americans will pay higher taxes under a President Obama they are talking about Capital Gains and Dividends; what we need to point out wherever we can is that, number one, Obama hasn't made a firm commitment to up those taxes (he wants to consider the economic climate when he assumes the Presidency), and 2. they are talking about tax deffered investments in 401Ks (Obviously, the tax issue will not become relevent until people are retired and are in a lower tax bracket at any rate), also I have heard that some Senior Citizens believe that Obama will raise their taxes, when in fact, Obama wants to do away taxing Senior with incomes of $50,000 or less! We on the left need to spread the word, tell our neighbors, print out this tax table that you have provided kyle, and show it to relatives, friends, and co-workers. We need to spread the good news!
