But He Doesn’t Care About a Washed Up Terrorist!

John McCain is confused.  He’s having an argument with himself, and he’s losing.  On one side, he wants to hit Obama with as much slime as possible.  On the other hand, he doesn’t want to be seen as a negative campaigner.

Unfortunately for him, neither side is winning.

For all the talk that McCain has adopted Rove style tactics, and other references to Rove in general, it is as clear as crystal that this is not a Rove ran campaign.  Rove may be the dirtiest of the dirty, but part of his strategic brilliance is that he always ensures that his candidate and the core of his campaign stays relatively clean.  It’s the ability to not leave fingerprints that makes a difference because then the campaign has the plausible deniability that it needs in order to keep its negatives from skyrocketing.

We just haven’t seen that from the McCain campaign this election.  McCain is launching the attacks that surrogates, or even better, 527’s should be using so that McCain can be the honorable man that he thinks he is.  Instead, he’s the one who is mentioning Ayers and ACORN himself, and it’s his ads, with his “I’m John McCain and I approve of this message” tagline that continue to perpetuate the smears.

Rove would never allow this.

This has created the walking, talking contradiction that is the McCain of the now.  In one sentence he says he doesn’t care about William Ayers, but then says that Obama needs to be candid about his relationship with Ayers.  He goes off on a smear laced soliloquy, and then says his campaign is about the economy.

This creates a combination of an incoherent message mixed with talking about petty things in a time when people feel we are in a national crisis, so it should come as no surprise that McCain continues to struggle in this election.

Still, I feel it necessary to point out that last night John McCain admitted that he regretted the tone of the campaign and some of the things that have been said.  Apparently, though, that regret must not have been all that great or else he wouldn’t be pushing these robo calls in battleground states:

Hello. I’m calling for John McCain and the RNC because you need to know that Barack Obama has worked closely with domestic terrorist Bill Ayers, whose organization bombed the U.S. capitol, the Pentagon, a judge’s home and killed Americans. And Democrats will enact an extreme leftist agenda if they take control of Washington. Barack Obama and his Democratic allies lack the judgment to lead our country. This call was paid for by McCain-Palin 2008 and the Republican National Committee at 202-863-8500.

It’s a simple question; do you really not care about Ayers, or is that a lie to try and save some scrap of honor?
