It assumes that it's a huge struggle and takes massive courage in order to love a black person. It's white people patting themselves on the back for doing what they should in the first place. I'd have rather Coates had written that this is the way family is supposed to be, and that there is nothing special here, and that anyone who refused to love and care for their child or grandchild based on the color of his or her skin is scum. Instead it's flipped so that being racist is nothing special, but loving your black grandson is a super-human achievement. Once again as always, "YAY WHITE PEOPLE!" Actually I didn’t like it.
