What the Right Doesn’t Want You to Know About Khalidi

Today’s latest faux outrage on the right (again being pimped by many of the same righties who brought us the “B is for Barack” mutilation hoax) is that Obama’s a bad dude because he attended a farewell party for Rashid Khalidi.

Of course, the fact that Khalidi is a scholar who is now a professor at Columbia University is of no consequence to the Right.  Hell, his name is Rashid Khalidi and he is Palestinian.  Therefore, by implication, anyone who met him must be against Israel, antisemitic, support terrorism, blah blah blah.

One small problem with this argument that the Nutters are failing to tell their readers:

During the 1990s, while he served as chairman of the International Republican Institute (IRI), McCain distributed several grants to the Palestinian research center co-founded by Khalidi, including one worth half a million dollars.

The Huffington Post has the full story.

If you want a good laugh, you can follow the whole desperate Nut-O-Rama on Memeorandum and here is the LA Times piece that has gotten the Wingers in full fury mode.

  1. Bob Della Valle says:

Rashid Khalidi is a fine scholar and a very moderate man in the Edward Said mold> He has never been a big supporter of Yasser Aarafat or Hamas.

  2. maya says:

I used to work with a Palestinian Christian who had a middle eastern name (I can’t remember it right now). I also assumed he was Muslim until he corrected me. Just being Palestinian doesn’t make you a Muslim, or a radical.
