If you’re still wondering why the U.S. Senate just rewarded Joe Lieberman for betraying Barack Obama and the Democratic Party, it’s because the Senate is this kind of place: a place where issues like the failing automotive industry, economic relief measures, the just-signed Status of Forces agreement between the U.S. and Iraq, et al., are set aside for hours so that departing senator and convicted felon Ted Stevens can give a long, self-indulgent farewell speech; after which the senator, who was found guilty on seven counts of criminal corruption, is greeted with a standing ovation that lasts almost a full minute (even though it is a violation of Senate rules and custom to give standing ovations); and two extra hours are given over for senators to make 10-minute speeches about “Uncle Ted.”
