Lest We Forget

This Veterans Day is particularly poignant to me as I lost my beloved grandfather, Attilio “George” Oliverio, less than one month ago on October 18, 2008 at the age of 87. George was a veteran of World War II who did his service in North Africa and Iran.

It is in loving memory of my Grandpa and all those like him who served our great Nation that I pay my respects on this Veterans Day.

My father, who passed away on August 10th of this year at the age of 87, was also a World War II Navy veteran who served in Europe. I never knew whether he declared his religion as “unitarian” when he enlisted because he was non-religious, or because he wanted to serve in Europe and feared they would send him to the Pacific if he admitted to being Jewish.

He told a wonderful story, though, about receiving shore leave in Casablanca. He and some other Jews serving on his destroyer were met at the docks by a Jewish couple who invited them to dinner. At that dinner, they uncorked a bottle of good wine that they had been saving for when their own son returned from the war. To them, having these American sailors visit them was a more significant occasion than welcoming their son home.

    Thank you.
