Sen. Durbin’s Daughter Dies

Created: November 1st, 2008 | Written By: Kathy

Sen. Durbin’s daughter, Christine, died of a congenital heart condition; she was 40:

Christine Durbin worked for 16 years for the U.S. Department of Agriculture in the emerging markets division. She lived with her husband and son in a suburb of Washington.

She “fought a heroic lifelong battle with heart disease,” Shoemaker said. “Our thoughts and prayers are with the entire Durbin family.”

He said Sen. Durbin would not be making a further public statement.

Christine Durbin is survived by her parents, husband Marty Johnson, son Alex, brother Paul and sister Jennifer.

Losing a child is pretty much the worst thing that can happen to any parent. Parents are not supposed to outlive their children. My heart goes out to Sen. Durbin, his wife, and their entire family on this loss — expected or not, it’s a stunning tragedy.

I met the lady. When Dick Durbin was making his first run to succeed Paul Simon in the Senate, Mrs Chief and I went to a fund raiser at Senator Simon’s private residence. We met more than one dignitary that day including the prime entertainment, who is now running for a senate seat from Minnesota, Al Franken, who by the waydid a mean impersonation of Senator Simon.

I did not realize Sen Durbin was old enough to have a 40 year old daughter.

My condolences to her husband & son and the Senator and his family.
