Rahm Is in the Clear, and the Wingnuts Cannot Stand It

Matttbastard wrote about the results of “Blagobamarahmbogate” (love that word!) earlier today.

Joe Gandelman has an excellent post up about the “professional Obama haters” who are falling over each other to find issues on which they can demonize him before he even gets to take the “-elect” off his title:

Democrat Bill Clinton had his big share of professional Clinton haters (both prominent and not so prominent would say things such as “He’s not MY President…”) and Democrats decried it and some Republicans defended it. Then came Republican George W. Bush who got his share of haters, then Republicans decried it (the most typical defense was to try and go on the offense and lump those who’d strongly criticize the President on policy with the professional Bush haters as suffering from “Bush derangement syndrome” — a tidy way to try to discredit all critics suggesting they were all unreasonable and not having legitimate grounds for strong criticism) and some Democrats who decried the lack of respect for Clinton defended it.

But here in December 2008 we ‘re seeing a special kind of political hatred — way early in the game.

President Elect Barack Obama has not put his fanny in the Oval Office chair for one second yet, and there is an intensity now among some Republican conservatives to … frantically push hot buttons — a probable harbinger of what is likely to come. Amid reports that the economy is not just bad but is on the brink of tanking, their emphasis is not on policy but overt or slightly disguised overt political demonization. Using whatever they feel can stick to rally their audience and/or readership.

Believe it or not, they’re still beating the now-thinly-disguised drum over Obama’s middle name “Hussein.” Which they wouldn’t do if it had been Walker or even Schwartz. Isn’t it time to call THIS detailed in this post for what it is? It’s politics of hate couched in (barely) plausible deniability.

The good news: the bulk of Americans aren’t buying the idea that at a time when stores are pulling out all stops trying to attract frightened buyers but signs now point to it being the worst in decades, it’s time for not just politics as usual but an expansion of political hatreds based on party or personal background.

Joe’s points seem particularly apt today, as we see the Associated Press publish yet another of their inexplicable articles insinuating unspecified “damage” to Obama and various members of his staff from the Blagojevich scandal:

In the latest in a series of strange reports from the Associated Press, hoping to connect the Blagojevich controversy to Barack Obama and his team, the wire service has a new report this morning insisting that the scandal “threatens” Rahm Emanuel.

The AP doesn’t point to any wrongdoing, of course, but it suggests some unknown evidence might, at some point, emerge to make Emanuel look bad. To describe this reporting as baseless speculation is an understatement.

That article looks pretty darned silly sitting directly under (at Memeorandum) the big ABC News story headlined “Exclusive: Obama’s Blago Report: Only One Rahm Call to Governor.”

Here are the first two paragraphs:

Sources tell me that the Obama team’s review of contacts with Illinois Gov. Rod Blagojevich will show that Rahm Emanuel had only one phone conversation with Blagojevich.

The contact, described as a “pro-forma” courtesy call, came as Emanuel was named Chief of Staff for Obama.  Most of the discussion concerned Emanuel’s Congressional seat (which had previously been held by Blagojevich), with only a “passing reference” to the Senate vacancy, according to these sources.  No deal for the Senate vacancy was discussed.

BTW, it is my goal to have Atrios calling it Blagobamarahmbogate before the week is done.

    😛

    (Thanks!)

I’ll have you know, mr. matttbastard, that I saw your post and put in the link yesterday, only about five minutes at most after I posted mine, and I didn’t see your comments here until this morning (just now). 🙂 🙂

So I’m behind, but I’m still way ahead of you. 😉

If Atrios is not calling it Blagobamarahmbogate before the week is HALF done, there is no justice in the world.

    ooops. 🙂
