Ironic Understatement

At the end of a very wonkish post about various ideas floating around about how to “reform” Social Security, Ezra Klein has this line:

It’s unclear why the richest nation in the world would have to cut its peculiarly spare pension program further. It’s even less clear why we’d do it having just seen how unstable other sources of savings can become.

I don’t have any particular comment to make on this sentence — I just wanted to share it, because it’s such a delightful, perfect example of ironic understatement.
