Most schizophrenic administration ever?

Yesterday’s news:

Arrayed around a long mahogany table in the White House state dining room last week, the CEOs of the most powerful financial institutions in the world offered several explanations for paying high salaries to their employees — and, by extension, to themselves. […]

But President Barack Obama wasn’t in a mood to hear them out … “My administration,” the president added, “is the only thing between you and the pitchforks.”

And today’s news:

The Obama administration is engineering its new bailout initiatives in a way that it believes will allow firms benefiting from the programs to avoid restrictions imposed by Congress, including limits on lavish executive pay, according to government officials.

Can anybody tell me WTF is going on?  That is not a rhetorical question: I’d seriously like for somebody to tell me exactly what the fuck is going on.  Because this isn’t making any sense whatsoever.

Usually one would, you know, think critically about these things and it would tend to make sense after a while.  And maybe I just haven’t read enough news lately to know what’s going on, but, on that thinking part…  Ponder this:

1) Today’s news story, which ran above the fold on the Washington Post, is based off sources within the Obama administration.

2) Yesterday’s story of the bank CEO meeting, by the Politico, was based off what non-administration attendees of the meeting told the Politico.  You know, the CEOs.

For those keeping score at home, the story which makes Obama look like an ass-kicking populist (hence good in the eyes of many) is conveyed by those allied against him to a marginal media outlet; and the story which makes Obama look like just another politician (hence bad) is pumped by his own people to one of the biggest newspapers in the country.

So again, can anybody make sense of this?
