As the world will find out in about two weeks the weather in Vancouver does not fit the American picture of Canada. As a matter of fact, it is down right temperate.
Don’t believe me?
Here is a great geeky tool for the chart/graph lover in you. It is a monthly summary of the highs and lows at the Burnaby Mountain weather station for the month of January. As you can see, we only dipped below freezing on the night of January 7th (31F/-1C). The other thing to note is that it rained roughly half of the month.
It is no wonder with weather like this that the old white picket railing on my porch is in a state that would have old Huck Finn busy whitewashing all summer.

I have to tell you, I spent a ridiculous amount of time in the gym with my little sister when she was a kid. It is “like deja vu all over again.”

These two purple belts were practicing their pattern when I finally got a break and pulled out the camera to snap a few shots.

It was a gorgeous day today. The sun was shining, it was 50 degrees Fahrenheit (10 Celsius for my Canadian friends), and I had my camera. Although the day was insanely busy I found 15 minutes at lunch to do a walk around our my old office building and I must have taken 20 good pictures with my Canon DSLR.
So it frustrates me a bit that it was this picture, taken at around 5:25 PM with my little pocket point-and-shoot Panasonic, that became my choice for day four. It was really a throw-away shot. I liked the way the lighting on the EA building looked in the dusk so I pulled the camera out of my bag and while i was framing the shot a dude comes flying out of the EA driveway on a skateboard. Snap! The anonymous EA employee/skater is in the left hand side of the shot.
You never know what you are going to like but for some odd reason I liked this one.
Happy Friday!

If you live in Vancouver like me, the daily drumbeat of negative stories surrounding the upcoming 2010 Winter Olympics might have you believing that the rest of the world has a similar negative image of our fair city. Personally I never bought into this meme but the constant nagging had certainly begun to skew my image of our host city. That is until last night when I turned on the WDIV evening news – yes America, Canadians actually get U.S. channels on the cable boxes in our igloos – I was treated to a profile of our Vancouver that had even me blushing.
Vancouverites – you should be proud of how your city is being portrayed on the world stage.

Only three days into Project 365 and I am already embarking on another life-altering project. Home brewing. Today’s photo is a capture of the half-loaded truck of the co-worker from whom I just purchased a lifetime collection of beer making gear.
At this point in the load-up you are only looking at a bottle washing rack, grain grinder, several fermenting bottles, a cooker, two 5-gallon buckets full of grain, three cases of “Grolsh-style” beer bottles, three 5-gallon kegs, a wooden rack and a canister of CO2.
As I said, this is only half of the equipment! Needless to say, the party will be at my house this summer.

This photo also reminds me that I fear he may be developing cataracts. That haze in his eye, while not present in the absense of direct light, is not a good sign.
I love this little guy.

Sphere: Related ContentIs Missing Ammonium Nitrate a Threat to the 2010 Olympics?
I would not be surprised if you were unaware of this story. There has been next to no press about it since the 2 tons of ammonium nitrate, twice that used in the Oklahoma City bombing, showed up missing from a shipment bound for North Vancouver.
With less than a month until the world’s eyes are B.C., Mounties are still trying to account for missing ammonium nitrate.
Two tonnes of the chemical compound, which has been used in several terrorist bombings, was originally reported missing to the RCMP on Jan. 6.
Kinder Morgan, a pipeline and energy-storing company, had been transporting 6,000 bags of material from Alberta to North Vancouver when two bags could not be accounted for days before Christmas.
The discrepancy was discovered when the shipment was moved by a third-party trucking company to a facility.
Initially the missing material was chalked up to a clerical error but last night the RCMP released an odd video statement claiming that they could not verify this conclusion. [UPDATE: It is worth noting that the video statement below was delivered to a camera only but in a setting that makes it appear it was in front of a press conference. There were no reporters present to ask questions.]
I have two questions at this point.
1) Could this be a threat to the safety of the 2010 Olympics which are only a couple weeks away?
2) Why the hell is this story not all over the news?
I know the tragedy in Haiti is justifiably consuming every moment of air time but this should not preclude the media from keeping people safe. I live here in Vancouver with my family and we plan on attending several Olympic events but if the RCMP and others can’t give me a sense that they have things under control I am not sure whether I will be simply staying home.
At minimum I would expect some commentary from the blogosphere on memorandum.
