Incentivizing Israel to Negotiate in Bad Faith

Not that Israel needs much incentive for that, but this basket of goodies the Obama administration is using to bribe Netanyahu into agreeing to a 90-day freeze on new settlements in the West Bank ONLY (East Jerusalem construction not affected) is a guarantee of failure. Among other things, the White House promised Israel that if they agree to this three-month freeze on new settlement construction in the West Bank, the U.S. government will not ask Israel to extend it again. So basically all Israel has to do now is wait out the next three months, when they can start new construction again and any possibility of a peace agreement will once again be dead.

Or, as Marc Lynch puts it, “What if they don’t solve Israeli-Palestinian borders in 90 days?”
