Taxes Suck

Some things just plain suck and taxes are certainly one of them. If polled for unpopularity taxes would likely fall somewhere between speed traps, mammograms,  and airport security. But like those things, taxes are a necessity in order for our society to function. I know people are fond of repeating that famous quote from Robert Fulghum, “It will be a great day when our schools have all the money they need, and our air force has to have a bake-sale to buy a bomber” but let’s be clear, the primary source of income for our government is tax revenue. If we cut taxes for everyone including the wealthiest of Americans as it appears is likely about to happen there is no back-up bake sale that will help us recover that lost revenue.

While it might feel good to have your taxes cut and it might sound good to say that tax cuts for the rich will generate jobs it is fact not good public policy. As George H.W. Bush famously said, the idea of trickle-down economics is simply “voo-doo economics.”

Nothing has transpired in the past 20 years to make that statement any less true. Reaganomics was a complete disaster for our country yet Republicans defend Reagan’s failed fiscal policies like a battered wife defending the actions of her husband. The only difference is that they have managed to convince themselves their base that cutting taxes and shrinking government is good and in turn have convinced the American public that these disastrous policies are the only reasonable option is a recession.

Sorry folks, I know this is not a political winner of a position for the Democrats among the talking heads and political chattering class but giving tax cuts during the worst economic downturn since the Great Depression is irresponsible. For those of you in Washington elected to serve our interests I say, the truth is on your side if you can muster the courage to use it.
