With 29 Democrats and 4 Republicans voting in favor of legalizing same sex marriage in the State of New York, the NY State Senate has just taken a huge step toward making the United States of America a more perfect union. You will likely hear many people complaining that this is was not a brave vote and that the deal made to allow religious institutions to discriminate was deplorable. Don’t pay it any attention. This is not about churches marrying people, it is about everyone having the same basic rights under the law. If churches choose to discriminate they will only continue to find themselves on the wrong side of history.
Congratulations America, congratulations New York and most of all congratulations to those couples who, 30 days from the signing of this law, will be able to enjoy the same rights and privileges I have enjoyed for the past 13 years.
