The Images The Right Does Not Want America To See
Al Rodgers at DailyKos has put together a tremendous collection of videos and pictures from Barack Obama’s visit to the Middle East.
Click on the first video and see the incredible reception Barack receives from the troops and staff members at the U.S. Embassy.
I’ve jacked one picture here, but click on the link and check out the whole thing.

Al-Maliki Is Foremost A Politician
As many are, I have been watching the comments coming from Iraqi PM Nouri Al-Maliki with some amusement as he twists John McCain and the Right in knots about US troop withdrawal from Iraq. Josh Marshall, as one might expect, has numerous posts with all the walkbacks and reverse walkbacks, etc.
But the major point being missed by many is that Al-Maliki really has no choice but to expressly support a US troop withdrawal in the very near future. Iraqi elections are right around the corner and his electoral opponents are undoubtedly making hay of the continued presence of, to paraphrase them, “an occupying army.” Al-Maliki will do what he needs to do to pick-up votes that can’t be manipulated in other ways. Hell, the guy was just passing out cash to voters on the streets of Baghdad.
While this may help Obama - if the media gives it much coverage - I still would warn those on the left to be wary of Al-Maliki. My belief is that he is taking this position solely out of political necessity.
I gotta admit, though, it sure is fun watching the contortions righties like Patterico are going through, over and over, pushing for a rewrite of what Al-Maliki is saying. Pat, as Atrios might say, check the kerning, buddy. I bet if you do, you’ll ultimately find that Al-Maliki is saying Iraqis love and support John McCain’s policy of “America Forever in Iraq!”

Sad and shocking breaking news … NBC’s Tim Russert has passed away at the age of 58 of a heart attack.
Many of us on the left had a lot of problems with his Washington insider coverage of politics. There was no doubt, though, that he was, like so many bloggers, a political junkie through and through. He was much too young to leave us.
I’m sure I speak on behalf of all of us at CFLF in extending our condolences to Tim’s family, friends and coworkers.

This is just coming and I haven’t seen the decision yet but this is a step in the right direction.
UPDATE: You can see the opinion here. It was a 4-3 vote. Most promising for changing attitudes regarding gay marriage is that 3 of the 4 justices in the majority were appointed to the bench by Republicans.

More often than not, the digital age has brought me to the point where I download a few or even just one song from most new releases. Yet, as a hardcore music fan, there still is nothing better than coming across a great album that you can listen to from beginning to end. I recently came across three great albums that are, as Sum 51 aptly stated, “all killer, no filler.”
Let me give you just a taste of each.

Sad news today as Deborah Jeane Palfrey, the woman persecuted as the “D.C. Madam,” has committed suicide rather than face a lengthy, federal prison sentence (a possibility of up to 55 years though prosecutors described her likely sentence as no more than 6 years).
The whole sordid affair struck me as a modern-day replay of the biblical lesson set forth at John 8:2-11 (Let he who is without sin cast the first stone).

Remember a time when we all - the right and media included - thought the deaths of 18 American soldiers mattered. Well, last month alone, 51 more American troops died in Iraq.
Yet, the average American would be forgiven if the they thought the number 51 was a reference to the number of days the media has continuously run stories on the Reverend Jeremiah Wright.

The gang over at TPM has been doing great leg work on tracking down the genesis of the lapel pin question asked at the Democratic Debate by regular person, Nash McCabe. TPM raised suspicions that ABC hunted her down after she was quoted in The Times on the same subject. McClatchy has now confirmed TPM’s suspicions … the question and questioner were hunted down and planted by ABC. I suspect ABC did the same thing with the regular person question to Hillary on Bosnia.

If you want to keep up with all the real happenings in Iraq, you cannot count on the coverage of ABC, NBC, CBS, CNN, Fox or any mainstream media outlet.
Instead, hands-down, the best site for information on Iraq is the Iraq Coalition Casualty Count. The information thereon goes beyond just the sad and depressing statistics regarding coalition troop deaths and wounded. The site had expanded to include information on Iraqi civilian deaths and, most importantly, acts as a daily aggregator of stories from a broad swath of media presenting both failures and successes.
Unfortunately, the site suffered a malicious attack about a week ago and lost a lot of data. The proprietor of the site has it back up in a more stripped down mode. At present, the contributions link is still gone, but I I would urge everybody who has used this great site in the past to consider throwing a buck or two that way.
The continued contributions of this site are too valuable to lose.

For all those who have been wondering about my drop off in blogging in recent months as opposed to six months ago, let me offer a brief explanation. I’ve actually been on an intense personal journey. I’ve been more interested in finding myself and finding broader universal truths than in worrying about the minor things — progressive politics, the minor nuances between Obama & Clinton, etc.
Now, I’m not normally one for proselytizing, but, given my history on this site, I beg you all to forgive this one indulgence. I’ve found something bigger than all of us. Mr. Cruise is right that there is only one true way. If you will just give me a brief moment of your time, I suspect this short video will change your life as it did mine:
