If a White Male Were to Make Such Racist Comments, He Would Have His Own Radio Show

Created: May 29th, 2009 | Written By: Kathy

I have a blog post up at The Moderate Voice about implied gender bias in a New York Times article about supposed concerns among SCOTUS watchers that Sonia Sotomayor’s so-called “sharp tongue” and “blunt style” raise “temperament” issues.

Do You Believe in Magic?

Created: December 27th, 2008 | Written By: matttbastard

Carmen D puts the latest iteration of the “Magic Negro” controversy in broader context by revisiting an old post of hers on the original source of the conservative meme, a 2007 LA Times op-ed by author (and OG Vast Left Wing Conspirator) David Ehrenstein:

Ehrenstein seems to think that Barack Obama is perceived to be safe by ‘white America’. No way, it’s not that simple. The hard truth is that for many in America, particularly in the middle of the country and in parts of the south, there is no such thing as a non-threatening black man. We don’t hear about hate mail or death threats endured by Obama and his family. But don’t you think those threats are coming at a rate only the great Hank Aaron might comprehend?

I am so sick of individual black people judging the ‘blackness’ of other black people. It is simply a waste of time and energy that we, as a community, can ill afford.

Related: Rep. John Conyers responds:

“I am deeply disturbed by the reported incidents in Algiers Point, Louisiana following Hurricane Katrina,” said Conyers, a Michigan Democrat, and chair of the House Judiciary Committee.

Algiers Point residents, Conyers continued, “allegedly shot randomly at African Americans who had fled to the area escaping the effects of the storm. Several injuries and deaths were reported. I am particularly concerned about accounts that local police fueled, rather than extinguished, the violence.”

Also see Color of Change, which has started a campaign asking  “Louisiana Governor Bobby Jindal, Louisiana Attorney General Buddy Caldwell, and the U.S. Department of Justice to investigate” the attacks.

Carved Up: Black Women and Bodily Integrity

Created: November 18th, 2008 | Written By: SylviaM

Hi, I’m Sylvia. I’m new to the CFLF crowd, and my regular blogging spot is at Problem Chylde. I’m a black twentysomething going through the sweet hell that is law school. I’m rounding out the first semester of my third year after putting down the Publish button for a few months. I tend to blog when I am amused, pissed, or some unholy combination of both. I’m also a cute bubbly ray of sunshine and light. Like it? No? Too bad. Shut up and listen.

I have to spell this out for my fellow commentators in the United States. I hate speaking to people as if they are children; but I guess after the Don Imus situation the lesson did not take.

Do not, do not, do NOT reduce a black woman to her body parts. We are no longer on the auction block. We are no longer museum exhibits. If you deign to respect a black woman as a full human being, do not celebrate her accomplishments by pointing out the nappiness of her hair or the fullness of her booty.

I should have known better to expect something intelligent and proactive from Salon.com. Salon has disappointed me in the past with its commentaries on women’s bodies and its subtle alliances with misogyny. But Erin Aubry Kaplan’s ode to Michelle Obama’s backside has hit the rock bottom of the barrel.

Michael Goldfarb’s Head Explodes

Created: October 30th, 2008 | Written By: Kathy

Well, it came close, anyway. You could see it in his eyes, and smile, and mouth. The name was trying so hard to push past his teeth and fly off his tongue and crash through his parted lips:

Racism and the Republican Party (who, apparently, lack any semblance of shame whatsoever)

Created: October 29th, 2008 | Written By: tas

Are you sick of it?  I am.

I’m tired of the McCain campaign using some racist charge of the day against Obama.  And yes, it feels like it has been one a day — and each charge is more pathetic than the last.

The Hoax Gets Hoaxier

Created: October 24th, 2008 | Written By: Kathy

The McCain volunteer ATM assault hoax now turns out to be even hoaxier. It seems that McCain’s Pennsylvania communications director made up details about the fake assault that went beyond even what the young woman herself claimed, and well before any of the alleged facts surrounding the incident had been confirmed or were known:

Love Has No Color

Ta-Nehisi Coates has an affecting piece about Barack Obama’s grandparents, which branches out from Obama’s experience of being raised and nurtured by white relatives, to a truth that often is overlooked or forgotten in the overall toxicity of this country’s racial history.

Need a good laugh?

Created: October 20th, 2008 | Written By: tas

Using the Internet for research can be dangerous because there’s just so much out there to sidetrack one’s thoughts…  For example, I inadvertently ran into Conservapedia a few minutes ago.  This is the wingnut response to Wikipedia because, you know, Wikipedia is just too liberally biased.  Conservapedia, however, bills itself as “The Trustworthy Encyclopedia,” so how can you go wrong?!

This just in: Colin Powell is black!

Created: October 19th, 2008 | Written By: tas

On the heels of Gen. Colin Powell, Bush’s former Secretary of State, endorsing Obama for President, Queen Wingnut Michelle Malkin would like to remind you that Powell is black.  She did such by running this photo of him (which could be photoshopped, for all I know):

With this photo, the Queen Wingnut not only shows that Powell is black but she demonstrates the extent his opacity.  Look!  He’s hanging out with rappers!  Did you know they’re black too?!  They sing about all them bitches and hoes!  And there’s Powell, dancing with them!  The next thing you know, Powell will give both of them a terrorist fist bump!  Quick whitey, run for your life!  Run like Carl Lewis! ..oops, I mean Usain Bolt! ..oops, I mean Jesse Owens! ..oops, I mean..  Christ, there aren’t any fast white track stars, are there?  Bah, doesn’t matter; run like Babe Ruth.  Just go go go!  BEFORE THEY GET YOU!

The “Bradley Effect” in Reverse

Created: September 17th, 2008 | Written By: DrGail

Much has been made of the Bradley Effect and its role in pre-election polling.  For those needing a refresher, the Bradley Effect is

Named for Tom Bradley, an African-American who lost the 1982 California governor’s race despite being ahead in voter polls, the Bradley effect refers to a tendency on the part of white voters to tell pollsters that they are undecided or likely to vote for a Black candidate, when, on election day, they vote for his/her white opponent.

The CW is that Obama’s likely results will be about 2 percentage points below what the advance polling suggests.

But what if the reverse is now true, 26 years later?
