On John Edwards ‘Love Child’

Created: July 24th, 2008 | Written By: matttbastard

“Double standard!” cries Slate media critic Jack Shafer.  “An elaborate cover up!” whines hacktacular OG ‘even the liberal’ blogger Mickey Kaus.  ‘Liberal bias!’ wails the wingnutosphere (surprise, surprise).

All that self-righteous sturm und drang simply because the MSM hasn’t dove on recent reports from that bastion of responsible journalism, The National Enquirer, alleging that former Democratic presidential candidate John Edwards cheated on his wife, Elizabeth, with a woman named Reille Hunter.

BREAKING: “Jewish Lobby” Story Overinflated

(MAJOR hat tips go to Matttbastard for doing the leg work on this one)

There will probably be more coming on this story as things develop. There are still questions; who’s Juan Carlos? How long did the post stay active? But one thing that seems increasingly clear is that the right is working overtime to force fire into a plume of smoke regarding an anti-Semitic post that used to be on my.barackobama.com.

The Associated Press:

President Bush feted Israel on Thursday in honor of the 60th anniversary of its founding and predicted that its 120th birthday would find it alongside a Palestinian state and in an all-democratic neighborhood free of today’s oppression, restrictions on freedom and extremist Muslim movements.

[...]

Bush made no acknowledgment of the hardship Palestinians suffered when hundreds of thousands were displaced or otherwise left following the creation of the Jewish state in 1948, a counterpoint to Israel’s two weeks of jubilant celebrations. Though Bush has set a goal of reaching an Israeli-Palestinian deal before the end of his term in January, he did not mention the ongoing negotiations or how to resolve the thorniest disputes.

The president also offered no detail on how the broader Mideast would move from today’s realities to his vision.

“From Cairo and Riyadh to Baghdad and Beirut, people will live in free and independent societies, where a desire for peace is reinforced by ties of diplomacy, tourism and trade,” he said. “Iran and Syria will be peaceful nations, where today’s oppression is a distant memory and people are free to speak their minds and develop their talents. And al-Qaida, Hezbollah and Hamas will be defeated, as Muslims across the region recognize the emptiness of the terrorists’ vision and the injustice of their cause.”

White House spokesman Gordon Johndroe said Bush made such a brief mention of the Palestinians because his purpose was to sketch “broad themes and not the specifics of the process.”

Uncle Steve on his lame-duck BFF:

Prime Minister Stephen Harper praised outgoing U.S. President George W. Bush for never promising anything he could not deliver as the two began a 48-hour North American leaders’ summit.

But it was unclear Monday whether anything will be promised, much less delivered, during the fourth annual Security and Prosperty[sic] Partnership meeting among Harper, Bush and Mexican President Felipe Calderon.

[…]

“What I appreciate most, what I’ve appreciated in our relationship over the past couple of years, is the fact that whether we agree or disagree, we’re always able to talk very frankly, very upfront,” Harper said at a photo opportunity Monday after an hour-long meeting with Bush.

“The president has never promised me anything he couldn’t deliver and that’s always appreciated.”

Ok.  I’m certainly not privy to what has gone on over the years during Dubya and Dear Leader’s “frank” and “upfront” conversations, so take my BDS-addled opinion with a healthy chunk of rock salt. Still, I’m not holding my breath while I await the arrival of that pony named “Democracy in the Middle East” (along with its dapple-grey sidekick, “Weapons of Mass Destruction”) that was supposed to have been delivered sometime after the fall of Baghdad.

I’ll be goshdarned if that notorious creative revolutionary, pale, isn’t the illegitimate granddaughter of Benito Mussolini (or Woodrow Wilson — hey, same diff, natch) . Oh, and I’m really and truly offended by the rank bigotry displayed here by liberal jackboots David Neiwert and PZ Meyers. A Darwin Fish is the burning cross of a godless materialist (white sheets, white lab coats — see where I’m going with this?)

Sylvia @ Problem Chylde has compiled an exhaustive, must read collection of Bhutto-related links, including this unfortunate post from Moe @ Jezebel (yes, Jezebel *sigh*):

So, was Musharraf, who’d just grudgingly conceded to share power with Bhutto and give up his army leadership position, behind the hit? That’s what conspiracy theorists inside my kitchen seem to believe. But then you’ve gotta wonder how he did it. Did Mr. Enemy of Terrorism Musharraf contract out a suicide bomber from Al Qaeda Inc.? Or does the Pakistani Army have a top-secret suicide unit, and if so, what do you have to do to get yourself enlisted in that? Josh Foust, of Registan.net and “That’s So Jane’s!” columns of yore says the theory doesn’t make sense. “She works much better as an opponent than as a martyr” for Musharraf, he claims. CNN seems to be focused on the question of what happens next: will they invoke military rule? (Isn’t that what you would do?)
